Julia Miller is best known for her carpentry skills in TV shows such as BBC's Housecall, ITV's Renovation Street, and Channel 5's Dream Holiday Homes with Carol Smillie. Having started a degree in Applied Chemistry, Julia knew her heart wasn't in it and dropped out to go to Spain. She was a Special Needs Assistant for Downs Syndrome and autistic children when she bought her first home, and money was too tight to afford professional builders. This is when she decided to do a carpentry course and fix the house up herself.
Here, she found her passion and, having ploughed through all of the carpentry and Health & Safety courses, Julia is as qualified as any chippie on the block. In fact, she was the first woman carpenter to qualify to Licentiate Level through the Institute of Carpenters. She has worked on building sites and for large building companies but prefers now to run her own business and work and design in domestic houses on 'real' projects. She has also taken up a part-time teaching post at the Hammersmith & West London College and would love nothing more than to inspire other women to move into the industry. Julia is 32, comes from Dublin, and has lived in London for 11 years.
